Johnie's Broiler  Est. 1958   more photos...
Designed by Paul B. Clayton. Johnie's Broiler opened back in 1958 as Harvey's Broiler. It was designed in the 50's drive-in restaurant style with lighted boomerang canopy and flamboyant signage visible to cars traveling on the busy thoroughfare of Firestone Boulevard.

A true Southern California car culture landmark, Johnie's was a favorite cruising destination, often clocking 5,000 classic cars per weekend during its heyday. Currently leased to a used car tenant. Officially declared eligible for the California State Register of Historical Resources in November 2002. For more information and vintage photos, visit http://www.johniesbroiler.org Adriene Biondo.

1414 South Fair Oaks  Est. 1958

Adriene Biondo
1414 South Fair Oaks began construction in 1958 by the architectural firm of Smith & Williams, landscape architects Eckbo, Dean and Williams, and planners Si Eisner and Lyle Stewart. Whitney Smith and Wayne Williams were South Pasadena-based architects whose collaboration resulted in designs which "include nearly every classification of architectural work from a garden tea house to a complete city," according to Whitney Smith. The 1414 office complex is an ingenious design layout which provided professional collaboration while maintaining individual practices for the partners. Three separate modules were designed and a distinctive vaulted roof constructed of metal mesh unifies the trio and provides shelter for interior and exterior spaces. Provisions for future expansion were creatively incorporated into the project’s design. There are later additions which were completed by the original architects.

1414 received an Award of Excellence from the Pasadena Chapter of the American Institute of Architects in 1959 and is listed by the AIA as one of the most significant examples of Los Angeles architecture constructed between 1947-1967. Garrett Eckbo, who designed the landscaping at 1414, was an award-winning postwar landscape designer whose unique design work is highly regarded. Adriene Biondo.
